Pentangeli

Corleone family friend Frank Pentangeli (Michael V. Gazzo) in the Godfather Part 2. Pentangeli testified against Michael in a trial because he thought Michael ordered an unsuccessful hit on him (Pentagneli), when it was actually Hyman Roth who ordered the Rosato brothers to kill him, saying Michael's name before doing so. Roth had an almost ingenius plan. He sent a police officer to break up the hit to make sure Pentangeli stayed alive to testify against Michael.
When Michael showed up at the trial with Pentangeli's brother Vincenzo from Sicily, Pentangeli became frightened and told the judges that all of the racketeering and murder charges against Michael were false, contrary to what Pentangeli swore to in an affidavit. Thanks to Michael's methods of using Frank's fear of his brother to stop him from letting the truth be known, Michael dodged a huge bullet and all charges were dropped against Michael.

Michael now had to get rid of Frankie. Pentangeli read many books about history in the Army base he was living on after his arrest. Frank compared the Corleone family to the Roman Empire. Michael ordered Tom Hagen to have a talk with Pentangeli after the trial and Tom told Pentangeli that the people who failed in a plot against the emperor in the Roman times were always given a chance to settle their fortunes and take care of their families before they (the plotters) were executed. Pentangeli, a history buff, said only the rich guys got a chance to do that. All the other people got killed unless they went home and killed themselves. Pentangeli said they sat in a warm bath, slit their wrists, and bled to death. Tom shook hands after Frank said that, obviously hinting at Pentangeli's suicide. It was an inevitible thing-Pentangeli slit his wrists in his bathtub while two FBI agents were playing a game of hearts in the next room. The FBI agents asked him to come out several times, when he didn't respond, they kicked the door down. They found a dead Frankie Five Angels.
